Leo AI: Brave’s AI assistant is now available

Leo, the AI ​​assistant natively integrated into the Brave browser, is finally available. Leo AI allows users to interact with the web pages they visit without leaving the page (for example, requesting a video transcript or an interactive article summary). It can suggest additional questions, expand on original content, and even help with reading comprehension.

What is a Leo AI?

Brave Leo AI is a chat assistant developed by Brave without using third-party artificial intelligence services, available to Brave users on the Nightly desktop channel. The model behind Leo is Llama 2, a large-scale security-focused language model available in the source code published by Meta.

We have ensured that user input is always sent anonymously to our inference infrastructure via a reverse proxy. In this way, Brave can deliver AI experiences with unparalleled privacy.

We align template messaging with Brave’s core values. However, as with any LLM, sample results must be carefully processed to identify potential inaccuracies or errors.

How to try Leo and share your thoughts?

Leo is available to all Brave’s Nightly channel users on desktop starting today. Late night desktop users can access Leo via the Brave Leo icon button in the Brave sidebar.

Leo is free for all Nightly desktop users and does not require a user account or login. Leo chats are not available for educational purposes and these conversations are not stored on Brave servers, so no one will see them. The conversation will be deleted immediately after you reply. Because of this, you cannot view past conversations or delete that data. First, they are not saved.

What data does the Leo AI browser transmit?

With Leo, the browser can keep track of the latest search terms on the server, the history of current conversations, and, if your use case requires it, the necessary context of the page you are currently viewing (e.g. articles).

As with all artificial intelligence, the more specific the instructions and context, the better Leo will perform. Give your Leo clear, detailed instructions and try repeating the question or message if you don’t get the exact answer you want.

Does Leo AI have access to real-time information?

Leo still does not have access to real-time information. However, we plan to offer a version of Leo in a future release that will provide some level of access to current information. This is possible thanks to our brave independent search. In addition to adding real-time information, we are improving the accuracy and user experience of Leo.

How does Leo AI work?

Brave has officially made the Leo AI assistant available to users, allowing them to easily search for information, solve problems, and create new content. For example, Leo can summarize web pages, answer detailed questions like cookie recipes, or translate and analyze websites in real time.

All of this is possible thanks to the Large Language Model (LLM) developed by Meta and Llama 2. Microsoft. As the company explained in a blog post, Leo 1.60 was released for desktop and offers better response times and quality.

The browser also noted that Brave was launched with privacy features in mind, as not only is it a free service, but users’ conversations with Leo are “private, anonymous and secure.” This means that the AI ​​assistant does not record conversations or use information or messages to teach the language patterns used.

Using Leo requires virtually no account or login. In this regard, Brave co-founder Brian Bondi noted that AI “can be a powerful tool, but it can also raise concerns about data privacy.” In this regard, he detailed the need for solutions that “prioritize privacy,” referring to Leu.

You don’t need an app or extension to access support, but it’s built right into your browser. So you can use it by clicking Ask Leo in your browser’s address bar or by clicking the bold icon in the sidebar that also appears in the sidebar in chat format.

Brave Browser Features

Brave’s AI assistant, Leo, will be rolled out in stages over the “next few days” and will also be added to mobile devices in iOS and Android browser versions in the “next few months.”

Leo Premium

Brave also launched a premium version of the assistant that offers an enhanced conversational AI experience by introducing Claude Instant, Anthropic’s “next-generation” AI assistant.

Leo Premium is designed for users who want to use “additional language models” beyond Llama 2 and is available for $15 per month. So users who subscribe to Leo Premium will have access to Claude Instant, which Brave says shows logical thinking and coding skills.

This language pattern also produces “longer and more structured” responses. Brave also announced that it will be rolling out additional models available to Leo Premium users, including higher rate limits, better call quality, priority waiting during peak hours, and early access to new improvements.

Leo: Make the most of Brave’s AI

The AI ​​available in Brave is not GPT Chat as I thought, but the Meta team’s AI is called Llama2 in version 13b and is called Leo. This is the default variant, but in the future you will be able to choose the Llama2 70B version with advanced chat options and Claude Instant. This is an AI completely independent of the main developer, and its future is bright.

It works just like what you would find on Bing Chat by adding a link and asking for a conclusion. But this option is more complete since it allows you to interact with the AI ​​and ask questions.
